Who are young carers?
Young carers are first and foremost young people, with all the issues, hopes, dreams, problems, and stresses that all young people have. But young carers are young people who happen to have caring responsibilities for a family member with a long-term illness, disability or addiction. This could be a physical disability, a mental health illness or an addiction to drink or drugs.
Young carers may include:
- An 8-year-old child helping their mum with household chores because she has Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
- A 12-year-old child helping their elder brother who is autistic
- A 15-year-old child looking after their younger siblings because their father is an alcoholic
The caring responsibilities might be:
- Personal care - e.g. washing, toileting
- Supporting in the home - e.g. cooking, cleaning, washing
- Responsibilities - e.g. ensuring medication is taken
- Emotional care - e.g. making sure someone is ok, cheering someone up
